Literally hundreds of different Vacumatic models exist. This guide is not a complete recapitulation of all models, but an effort to help collectors identify and date their pens.
Dating is rather simple since most Vacumatics have a date code engraved on the body to the right of the imprint.
The first date codes emerged in 1935. Early codes used two digits — the first digit denoted the quarter and the second the year. For example:
In the second quarter of 1938 the system changed to a dot system. The stamp initially had three dots and one was filed down for each quarter.
Since production continued for over a decade, a pen marked "8" may be from either 1938 or 1948. Model differences help determine the correct decade.
